Theo came across an interesting printed piece recently; musicians and chart-toppers CAKE have  created a limited edition book which was printed letterpress on 100% PCW paper using Vandercook proofing presses. The most interesting aspect is that T-shirts from each of the band members were used to create special paper for this 24-page lyric book that accompany the band’s single, “Bound Away”. Theo of course purchased this unique gem, being an edition of 415 out of 1000 total copies.

The beautiful textured cover of the BOUND AWAY book

As you open the book, its clear to see how much work has gone into it.

Illustrations were hand-carved linoleum and the cover paper is handmade using clothing from all members of CAKE. Endpapers are then handmade from recycled jute coffee sacks and binding thread is handspun. Type is handset in Alternate Gothic No.2 Univers (and ode to the Gothic typeface) and various other type found at the SFCB.

The book is made from recycled clothing from the band members.

The limited editon of 1,000 handmade packets were produced in California in true DIY fashion by bandmadebooks and are signed by each of the band members. The cover paper is beautifully multicoloured from the different garments from each band member, which reflects on this beautiful books ink specks and texture of the paper – a truly unique item indeed!
